Workplace is pleased to announce its move to 50 Mortimer Street, the gallery’s new permanent space in London. The gallery will open to the public on 9th June, 2022 and will launch with a group show of new and recent works by represented and invited artists.
With a floor to ceiling glass street frontage and arranged over two floors, the 1,500 square foot gallery in the heart of Fitzrovia combines the best features of Workplace’s current spaces into one and is motivated by the necessity for more space in a central location following the growth of the gallery’s programme; in just one year Workplace has added four new artists to its roster: James Prapaithong, Olivia Jia, Miko Veldkamp and Katinka Lampe.
Bringing together international and British artists who respond to the art historical legacies of specific media whilst focussing upon an interrogation of socio-political contexts, the gallery is underpinned by a constant commitment to excellence and the development of artists at all stages of their career.
Originally founded in Gateshead in the North of England, ‘Workplace Gallery’ was established in 2005 by Miles Thurlow and Paul Moss. Occupying a Brutalist building in a post-industrial city, the gallery continued to operate as a hybrid space, combining a commercial gallery and a publicly funded art organisation until the launch of the charity ‘Workplace Foundation’ in 2018 which currently operates in Newcastle and continues a legacy of supporting artists from the region. After a hiatus from the commercial scene following the illness and subsequent death of Paul Moss, Thurlow relaunched the commercial gallery as ‘Workplace’ in 2020, fully relocating its operations to London.
Miles Thurlow says ‘I am excited for this new stage of the gallery’s development following our relaunch with a new mission and programme in 2020. The new space will afford our artists the opportunity to be as ambitious as they wish to be and for their work to be exposed to a wider audience in a thriving neighbourhood’.
